Robotic-Assisted Surgery (RAS) is advancing rapidly across Scotland, with leaders in healthcare innovation describing the technology as a pioneering path to the future. The technology offers heightened precision and magnified 3D vision, all directed by the surgeon’s expertise. While the immediate rollout is already transforming patient care, experts suggest it is merely the tip of the iceberg.

New Equipment at Forth Valley Royal Hospital

NHS Forth Valley adopted the state-of-the-art technology on a phased basis from the end of March. The hospital has now announced the completion of 19 RAS procedures during the last six weeks. This move was made possible by £2.5 million in Scottish government funding.

The funding cleared the way for Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert to enhance the delivery of complex surgery across colorectal, gynaecology, and urology services. The hospital installed a new Da Vinci XI dual-console robotic system to facilitate this work, which includes cancer care.

The facility initially focused on shorter, more simple procedures like hernia repairs. Following positive patient feedback, the hospital plans to introduce additional colorectal, gynaecological, and urology procedures and train additional surgeons over the coming months.

Goals and Benefits of the Technology

Forth Valley Royal Hospital aims to undertake around 200 procedures in the first year, 350 in year two, and approximately 400 in year three. InnoScot Health, a leader in healthcare innovation, believes this milestone helps benefit the wider health system by providing faster, more effective surgery.

Executive Chair Graham Watson noted that a dozen health boards in Scotland are realizing the benefits of RAS. These include shorter operating times, reduced blood loss, and a lower risk of complications. He also highlighted that patients experience less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times.

NHS Forth Valley’s Associate Medical Director for Women, Children and Sexual Health, Dr Julie Christie, said the introduction of RAS technology had gone really well. She stated it is now enabling staff to deliver high-quality complex surgery closer to home. The technology also improves outcomes for patients and further enhances clinical skills and experience.

As the NHS Forth Valley ambitions indicate, the direction of travel is clear. The goal is to transform patient outcomes, ease waiting list pressures, and enhance equity of access. Experts believe RAS will eventually become the standard for many Scottish operations.

Graham Watson emphasized that the current capabilities are only the beginning of the technology’s potential. He pointed to the future integration of AI-powered ‘copilots’ designed to anticipate risks and identify optimal surgical approaches. The technology also promises the prediction of tissue motion in real-time and the possibility of telesurgery, which would allow procedures to be performed more remotely.

Scotland has further led the way in executing the first clinical cases of robotic aortic valve replacement (AVR) through a tiny incision in the neck. This approach could potentially be applied to a wide range of cardiothoracic procedures. Three out of four cardiac centres in Scotland use the innovative technology of Glasgow-based CardioPrecision — a spinout of InnoScot Health, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and the Golden Jubilee National Hospital. Last year, the world leader in transcervical access for the treatment of structural heart disease successfully extended its robotic-assisted procedure to patients with the use of its CoreVista Robot Enabling Platform.
